Nantucket Baskets, custom made purses and handbags, and other decorative baskets are available online at Nantucket Basketworks of Cape Cod. Each handmade specialty basket, purse, or tote bag is crafted with care to be decorative, practical, and durable.

Because each basket is made to order, delivery time is approximetly 8 weeks. We will contact you if there is any delay.
We also deliver USPS. Prices are subject to change without notice. Please e-mail us at nantucketbasketworks@comcast.net with any special requests or instructions. We are more than happy to work with you on an individual basis to create just what you are looking for.

We will give shipping charges via e-mail to buyers for shipment outside of: United States and request their approval prior to shipment.

Taxes

We collect state sales tax when shipping to the following states:

About Us

Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated over 150 years ago. They were first created by the crewmen of lightship vessels as a way to pass time at sea. They feature distinctive rattan or cane hand woven onto wooden molds with wooden bases. The handbags are decorated with carved or scrimshawed pieces.

Lisa Bessette, proprietor of Nantucket Basketworks of Cape Cod, learned the fine art of Nantucket basket weaving from her father. Together, they made Nantucket Baskets, handmade purses and tote bags, and other beautifully handcrafted gifts for many years. Her baskets are all authentic originals and are signed and dated on the bottom. Lisa weaves each and every basket offered for sale here. Her homemade handbags, baskets, and other gift items can be purchased here, from her website, or in fine shops on Cape Cod. They can be seen at The Spotted Cod on Main Street, next door to The Daniel Webster Inn, Sandwich MA. Your authentic Nantucket Basket will be made to order using only the finest quality materials available and will last a lifetime.

Lisa's classic 9 inch oval purse is featured on the cover of Cape Cod Magazine's Nov/Dec 2011 Holiday isse. Her opera bag is featured in the gift guide. Recently her work has alos appeared in Coastal Living Magazine 2011.

Ms. Bessette's baskets have been photographed for many national magazines as well as a full page photo that appeared in The New York Times of her backpack basket. Lisa Bessette is a native Cape Codder who grew up in Woods Hole in the shadow of Nobska Lighthouse. She and her husband Bill reside in the beautiful town of Sandwich with their daughter, twin sons. The Bessettes are now teaching basket making classes in their home.
